Description

What you'll learn in this dye class:

Forage for your dye from nature, grow some in your garden, or grab from your kitchen!

In this class we'll discuss why we need to properly prep our fabrics, use natural materials to get lasting colors, and how to use modifiers to change shades or fix your work.  Even some shibori and bundle dyeing.

Each student will get to dye 3 items, to learn how to bundle dye, stove top, and vat dye.

Leave knowing how to start your own dye journal, store your dye baths to get the most out of your foraged materials, and where to source materials from earth conscious companies.

All materials will be provided, but students welcome to bring smaller all natural articles that are prewashed in pH balanced soap. (More info with sign up)

The class was awesome. Karin was great to learn from and super helpful at guiding us along the process. We made beautiful pieces, and I had a blast playing with the dye techniques. I loved the class so much, I immediately signed up for more.

Its impressive that so much creative activity is contained in the time of this class. You take home three distinct samples of your experience - two useful pieces of cloth and a beautiful silk scarf - dyed with Karin's fascinating collection of plant/mineral material and her extensive knowledge of techniques. I will pass no plant (only harvesting 30%), and throw nothing in the compost bin without thinking of it's future life as a source for dye. The studio is easy to get to, steps from the L train and a little walk from the M.

I thought these class was fun. I was disappointed in the amount of work and supplies needed to work in this medium and the fact that the samples washed pale in the first wash. But I learned where I was making mistakes and enjoyed the class. Kerin was a good teacher and answered all my questions. I would take another class with her in the future.

The instruction was fantastic! We learned so much in 3 hours, and had 3 dyed pieces to take home. It was a perfect balance of instruction and hands on. Great for beginners or people knowledgeable about dyeing and textiles.

Can't recommend enough! I've been reading about natural dyeing for quite a while, and the hands on experience really solidified my beginner's journey. Karin is thoughtful with her explanations and clearly knowledgeable about the topic. I felt like I was able to explore creatively and also ask questions when needed. THANK YOU :)

Entering the door of Better Than Jam's Studio located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, I was immediately inspired. The space and interesting artworks around the studio increased my sense of anticipation. Karin is a patient and thorough teacher. She brought a group of people with diverse backgrounds in arts through a series of well planned and practiced exercises. I left with three samples of different processes utilizing natural dyeing as well as some Shibori techniques. I look forward to further study with Karin. Highly recommended.

Question from Elizabeth W.
Will you be able to learn how to dye leather?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Students can bring materials to sample. But be warned that not all leather will dye. They can add leather info to the regular class discussion. The instructor always asks students prior to the session if there is something they would like to accomplish so the instructor can prepare for each class.

Question from Lauren H.
I'm interested in dying paper, not necessarily fabric. Could I bring an assortment of hand-made, rice, Thai etc.... papers to work with? Thank you. Lauren Hunt
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Lauren! You are welcome to bring papers. The instructor personally does not work with papers, so can’t instruct properly but she is down for the experimentation.

Question from Deanna M.
Will we be dying objects we can take home and use- tea towels, a scarf, or something similar, or will we just be practicing with scrap fabric?
Answer from Nessa G. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
The school will provide test fabrics that you can use to track your history with the process, and bandana and kitchen towel size pieces for final works. If you want to bring fabric, you must make sure that it is all natural fiber and pre-washed.
